201 Baptised on this date COOGAN Elizabeth Mary (Lizzie) (I875)

202 Baptised Our Lady Assumed into Heaven Catholic Church Mitchelstown on 31.10.1841. The name on the Baptismal record is difficult to read. It appears to be Joana or maybe Hana. Everywhere else she is recorded as Hannah Agnes. The Agnes is probably a confirmation name. The godparents for Baptism were Daniel Lyons and Bridget O'Brien.

Parents: Daniel and Mary Cox (nee Slattery). There was some confusion here. The Registrar-General Brisbane had put David Cox on a copy of the marriage certificate probably poor handwriting and Dan O'Regan, the son listed Peter Cox as father on Hannah's death certificate. Peter is her brother. Daniel Cox rented 13 perches of land with a house for his family from the Earl of Kingston the local landlord.
Hannah came to Australia in approx 1864. Mother Wilfred said her mother took the place of another woman on the ship at short notice therefore came out under another name.

Throughout her life Hannah maintained regular written contact with her brother Peter and his children. Peter and his wife Molly had seven children, five of whom went to live in the USA. See separate family tree for Peter and his descendants to the present day.

Hannah died in Maryborough 10.1.1922 age 80 of bronchitis, exhaustion and cardiac failure. At the time she resided with her daughter Elizabeth at Fort Street. The sole beneficiary and executor of the will was Elizabeth.

The late Mrs Fitzgerald of Boowoogum, Wide Bay district whose death occurred in a private hospital in Brisbane had been in failing health for some time. She was born in Sydney 67 years ago but had resided at Boowoogum for many vears being one of the first white women to settle in the Wide Bay Creek. Among her early experiences, Mrs Fitzgerald used to recall having been chased from her home on her husband's selection by a number of half civilised blacks in the middle of the night. The late Mrs Fitzgerald, who was a widow, leaves a grown up family of three sons and three daughters.

Effie attended the Normal School in Brisbane and was in Fourth class in 1868. Her teacher was a Miss Marshall.

In 1862 a new building, designated the Normal School was erected within the grounds of the Brisbane Boys and Brisbane Girls Primary Schools, and thereafter those schools were usually referred to as the Brisbane Normal Boys and the Brisbane Normal Girls Primary Schools. The most important function of the Normal School was that of a training centre where pupil-teachers could see the best and most efficient teaching methods in operation.
