    Melba House at Marian
    Melba House at Marian
Melba House was the Marian Mill manager's house until a new one was built in the late 1920s. It was moved next door to the new residence where it was occupied by the Chief Engineer. It has now been moved to a location on the outskirts of Marian, overlooking the Pioneer River, where it operates as a visitor information centre.

  • Notes
    • In the 1908 and 1909 electoral rolls, Jack is listed as an engineer at Pleystowe. In 1912 and 1913, Jack is listed on the electoral roll at Marian as an engineer (1912) and a second engineer (1913). In 1918 he and Mary moved to Racecourse Mill where he was chief engineer. 1919, he and Mary are at Racecourse Mill where he is again listed as an engineer. In 1920 he moved back to Marian Mill as General Manager. This meant that he was in charge of all operations which included all mill operations and the finance etc.

For 1925, 1930 and 1936, on the rolls, he is listed as a Manager at Marian and Mary has home duties.

His son tells the story that when his father was courting Grandma, Granddad used to ride a push bike into town to see her and he would sometimes have a goose tucked under his arm as a gift - beats flowers! There is also the story that when Pop left Racecourse, he was given a gold watch - they couldn't get gold hands so one of the directors took the gold hands off his watch and had them put on Pop's watch. His friends were Jake Hillman, a tailor in Mackay and Mr Hedrick a farmer near Mt Blackwood as well as others from the Mill.
