      OBITUARY
      MR. JAMES O'NEILL
Yet one more link in the chain connecting, the past with the present was severed by the death of one of Mackay's grand old pioneers, early yesterday morning in the person of Mr. James O'Neill, a resident of long-standing in the Pleystowe district, where he carried on farming pursuits. Deceased arrived here from County Carlow, Ireland, in the year 1885 and was first employed by the Pleystowe Co., which then controlled a large sugarcane plantation. When the company cut up the estate the late Mr. O'Neill was one of the early purchasers of a block of land, where he remained until about four years ago, when he decided, to take a well earned rest.

On retiring he transferred the farm to two of his sons and one son is at present holding the property. The late Mr. O'Neill enjoyed splendid health until recently, but while it was known to his family that he was not as robust as formerly, it was little thought that a general break-down was so close. This came only a few days ago and at the fine old age of 73 years he passed to that bourne from which there is no return. His life was one of industry, perseverance, and courage, qualities which enabled him to overcome the trials, tribulations, and vicissitudes which faced the early settlers.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to the Walkerston cemetery, and was largely attended. Rt. Rev. Monsignor Mulcahy conducted the obsequies at the graveside and also officiated at the solemn service held at the Roman Catholic Church prior to the cortege moving off to pay the last sad tributes of respect to one who was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. Chief mourners were Messrs. John O'Neill, manager Marian Sugar Mill; James and William O'Neill; Mrs. B. Farrelly, and Annie O'Neill, sons and daughters, residents of Mackay and district. Another daughter, Mrs. Rutter, resides at Wowan. To all members of the family sympathy wiil be extended in their bereavement. Mrs. O'Neill, sen., predeceased her husband many years ago, as also did one son and daughter.
