  • Notes
    • The surname is spelt in numerous ways in documents - Hamill, Hammell, Hamil.

Stephen's death certificate states that he had been in Australia for 43 years when he died in 1899 which means that he arrived around 1856. This cannot be correct as he married in 1854.
There is an S Hamill aged 32 who arrives in Melbourne on the 5 Dec 1852 departing from Plymouth on the Anglesey but the nationality is English. See Ancestry transcription - original not able to be found.

The Brisbane Courier Wednesday 21 June 1899
      A SUDDEN DEATH
Stephen Hammill, an elderly man who resided at Harcourt Street, New Farm, was proceeding to his work yesterday morning at a quarter past 7 o'clock when he was observed to fall down suddenly and upon assistance arriving he was found to be dead. Hammill was met by an acquaintance some 100 yards from his house and the pair carried on a conversation for a few moments. The deceased had only proceeded another fifty yards when he dropped. Hammill was a labouring man, 72 years of age. The matter was reported to the police and an inquiry had been ordered.

In Griffiths Valuation of 1855 in the Parish of Killard, townland of Sragh, there is a James Hamill who has 30 acres of land with a valuaion of £5/5/0.
