    • On 6 May 1990, Professor Ward, together with his wife Patricia, 69, and his daughter Jennifer, 36, were on board the 3801 steam train on a Sunday excursion run between Sydney and the Hunter Region. They were all killed when a commuter train collided with the rear of the steam train near Hawkesbury River railway station in the Cowan rail accident.

      WEDDING IN ENGLAND HAS SYDNEY INTEREST
      An Australian school teacher and a university professor of history who met aboard ship on their way to England about 18 months ago, will be married at West Kirby, England today. The bride is Miss Patricia Webb, only daughter of the late Major Phillip Webb and Mrs Webb of Vaucluse. She went overseas on the teachers' exchange system and has been teaching in Northern Ireland. The bridegroom is Professor John Ward, of Strathfield, a Dominions Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge, and Challis Professor of History at Sydney University. The wedding will take place at the home of the bride's uncle. Captain Malcolm Glacier, at West Kirby. Professor and Mrs. Ward will return to Sydney in the Strathaird in January.
